Thank UMich for Standing Up for Free Speech

When pro-Hamas activists at the University of Michigan tried to silence Israeli Doctor Nadav Davidovitch’s lecture, Dr. Belinda Needham, the school’s Chair of the Department of Epidemiology, refused to cave to the pressure. In the name of “health equity and justice,” students demanded Davidovitch be disinvited, saying his appearance would be tantamount to an endorsement of “deliberate genocidal actions.” Instead of giving in to the cancel-culture mob, Needham upheld the principles of free speech and academic freedom by ensuring the event went on as planned. At a time when viewpoint diversity is increasingly under attack at colleges and universities, it is crucial to recognize those who are willing to stand firm. When you sign the petition at right, NTC will add your name to a letter telling Dr. Belinda Needham “THANK YOU for staying true to the stated values of the University of Michigan and supporting freedom of speech!” The letter demanding Davidovitch’s lecture be canceled received more than 220 signatures — let’s dwarf that number with hundreds more names of Americans from coast-to-coast who stand in support of free speech and against cancel culture! NTC Twitter Campaign Goes 3-for-3

Update (01/14/23): The Mythinformed Milwaukee (@MythinformedMKE) account has been reinstated! Update (12/22/22): Nicole Solas (@Nicoletta0602) had her account reinstated! Update (11/21/22): James Lindsay (@ConceptualJames) had his account reinstated! “I’m grateful for the grassroots action mobilized by the New Tolerance Campaign supporting my reinstatement and others silenced by Twitter for speaking truth,” Lindsay said. “Elon Musk has shown he listens to the voice of ‘the people’ on Twitter, and NTC is making sure the people are heard.” The New Tolerance Campaign will be Boston this week at the Parents Unite conference — and we’re using the occasion to shine a spotlight on the voices silenced by Twitter for exposing the youth indoctrination taking place across the country. And not a moment too soon — just hours ago, incoming Twitter owner Elon Musk fired CEO Parag Agrawal in a massive shakeup that portends good things for freedom of speech, but this isn’t the time to make assumptions. The Parents Unite gathering will celebrate “Diversity of Thought in K – 12 Education,” but sadly there is increasingly less “diversity of thought” in education to celebrate. Parents are being elbowed ever-further to the margins for criticizing policies in the classroom, and individuals who pull the curtain back on groupthink pushed by educators and elites are finding themselves locked out of social media by Big Tech overlords. The New Tolerance Campaign is asking for your help to get three of the most prominent Twitter accounts in the movement reinstated: Nicole Solas (@Nicoletta0602) — Shut out of Twitter for a quote-tweet critical of drag queen classes for youth supported by Colorado state legislators. James Lindsay (@ConceptualJames) — Banned for criticizing “the sexualization of children” following a targeted campaign orchestrated by the far-left group Media Matters. Mythinformed Milwaukee (@MythinformedMKE) — Suspended after posting an exposé in which an LGBTQ Pride parade attendee declared support for “kink with kids.” The New Tolerance Campaign has won these battles before — but we need your grassroots support to do it again…and there has never been a better time than NOW!       [Lindsay photo credit: Gage Skidmore, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons (cropped w/graphic overlay)]

Students for a Democratic Society

On January 21, 2025, a Turning Point USA event at the University of Washington headlined by women’s rights advocate Olivia Krolczyk was disrupted by protesters as part of a counter-rally organized by Students for a Democratic Society. Students pulled fire alarms, broke windows, and obstructed other students’ path to class while carrying signs stating “No TPUSA Transphobia at UW!” and “UW Stands Against Transphobia.” Krolczyk reported that she experienced “threats of violence” and was “harassed by protestors [and] held hostage in a room” during the event, which was ultimately canceled due to Students for a Democratic Society’s violent antagonism.

Ryan Michael “Riley Jane” English

On January 26, 2025, transgender Ryan Michael “Riley Jane” English traveled from his home in Massachusetts to the nation’s capital with the intent of murdering leaders in the conservative movement. He turned himself in to Capitol Police before he could inflict any harm. According to court documents, English had the intention to kill “‘Nazi’ Secretary of Defense, Peter Hegseth, and/or the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, and/or burn down the Heritage Foundation” in order to “send a message.” English later turned his focus to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “Originally, English’s thoughts were to use the small bottles of vodka to start fires and later to wrap them in rags soaked in alcohol, light them and throw them at Bessent’s feet,” a court affidavit stated, and that “in the event English was able to get close enough to Bessent, English would have stabbed him with the knife that English brought from home.”

Activists spraypainted pro-Hamas slogans and cemented the building’s sewage system, protesting the university’s expansion projects in Harlem and its association with the Apartheid Global Center in Tel Aviv.

Hate Map

Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD)

Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) is a student-led organization at Columbia University advocating for the institution to divest from companies associated with Israel. According to their Instagram account, CUAD is a “Coalition of 100+ Columbia University student groups who see Palestine as the vanguard for collective liberation” and claims to be a “continuation of the Vietnam anti-war movement and the movement to divest from apartheid South Africa.” On September 16, 2024, CUAD shared a post by the Unity of Fields Instagram account calling for the mass evasion of public transportation fares and labeling police, “Zionists,” and “surveillance infrastructure” as targets for violence. The post stated: “Fares are free. Don’t pay. Join us in mass fare evasion. Take our city back from the pigs. Let repression breed more resistance. All zionist, police & surveillance infrastructure are legitimate targets.” This post and CUAD’s promotion of it contributed to a large anti-police riot in New York City demanding taxpayer-funded public transportation. The Unity of Fields account that posted the original call for violence was later disabled by Meta, as confirmed by a post from an alt-account on September 25, 2024. In January 2025, CUAD, alongside the Palestine Solidarity Working Group and NYC Resists with Gaza, vandalized Henry R. Kravis Hall. Activists spraypainted pro-Hamas slogans and cemented the building’s sewage system, protesting the university’s expansion projects in Harlem and its association with the Apartheid Global Center in Tel Aviv. On February 27, 2025, Barnard College dean Leslie Grinage was held captive by pro-Hamas members of CUAD and Columbia’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter. Reports claim that two university employees were physically assaulted, the campus was vandalized, and classes were canceled. Protesters were calling for the reinstatement of two pro-Hamas classmates who were expelled for interrupting a History of Modern Israel class with antisemitic propaganda. Grinage was eventually released and the protest moved from the university to the streets of New York City.
